What is it?

As an NDIS support worker, having First Aid and CPR training is crucial. These courses equip you with the necessary skills to handle emergencies and provide essential care in critical situations. Whether it’s a minor injury or a life-threatening event, training helps you respond confidently and effectively when needed.

This lesson also highlights what you need to prepare before booking your courses and certifications, ensuring you’re ready to go. Confirm the training required for the supports you provide and the organisations you work with.

Why it matters

First Aid and CPR training helps prepare you to respond to medical emergencies, ranging from minor injuries like cuts and bruises to life-threatening situations such as cardiac arrest, severe allergic reactions or breathing difficulties.

Training is where you learn to assess an emergency and respond within your skills. A written guide does not replace practical instruction.

What to expect in a course

Theory component

In the theory portion of the course, you’ll cover the knowledge you need to respond to emergencies. You’ll learn how to recognise warning signs of common medical emergencies and understand the steps to take in those situations.

You’ll also go over important ethical and legal responsibilities, so you understand your scope and boundaries. Depending on the course, topics may include CPR, automated external defibrillators (AEDs), anaphylaxis and asthma first aid.

Practical component

The practical side is where you get hands-on experience. You’ll practise skills such as performing CPR, using an AED, and applying bandages and dressings. The hands-on sessions are designed to simulate emergencies so you can apply what you’ve learned in a controlled environment.

Course options

  • Blended learning: Complete theory online, then attend the practical components in person.
  • Local courses: Look for a suitable training provider and a practical session that fits your schedule.
  • Remote locations: Ask providers how they arrange practical assessment in your area.

Pricing and renewals

The supplied guide gives indicative costs of $100 to $200 for First Aid and $50 to $100 for CPR. These are planning examples, not current quotes. Check the provider’s price and what the course includes before booking.

First Aid refresher training is commonly recommended every three years, with CPR refreshed annually. Confirm the renewal and training requirements for your role with your training provider and organisation.

Tip: Mark renewal dates on your calendar and keep certificates safe and accessible as proof of completion.

What you’ll need when booking

  1. Personal identification: Check which documents the provider accepts.
  2. Unique Student Identifier (USI): For nationally recognised training, check your USI requirements. You can create or find your USI at usi.gov.au.
  3. Payment details: Confirm the course fee and any deposit or cancellation terms.
  4. Course confirmation and materials: Check the dates, times and location. Some courses provide online study materials to complete in advance.

Tip: Keep your USI in a secure place. You’ll use it for future nationally recognised training.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Delaying training: Waiting too long can delay your ability to take on participants or start a role.
  • Choosing a course without practical assessment: Check that the course meets the requirements of your work.
  • Missing renewals: Set reminders and keep your completion records organised.
